Practice your sight words!
First graders are expected to master 150 sight words by the end of first grade. We practice sight words in many capacities at school - recognizing, writing, spelling, finding within text. Three times throughout the year, we will take the FAST assessment as a check-in for literacy skills. One of the measurements of this test is sight word fluency. Here are the goals for sight word fluency on the FAST assessment:
Fall (September): 17 words per minute
Winter (January): 50 words per minute
Spring (April): 67 words per minute
Each week, our weekly sight words are posted on the weekly newsletter, but the list of all 150 sight words is available on this page, as well as ideas on how to practice these words.
Happy practicing!
